The R.U.T.H. Foundation for Women is a nonprofit organization that gives assistance to single mothers in need. Founded by Shanicka Vail House, the organization serves as an advocate for single mothers by raising funds to assuage the financial pressures of everyday living expenses like rent and utilities, groceries, and childcare essentials like formula, diapers, baby food, medicine, etc. The R.U.T.H. acronym, “Real Uplifting Through Hugs”, embodies the heart of her vision, while also honoring the legacy of her Grandmother, Ruth.
Holding degrees in Sociology and African American Studies, Shanicka has always been passionate about serving the community, especially highlighting issues concerning women and mothers. The work of TRF4W began in January 2019 as a social media movement and continued throughout the height of the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic. “Many were losing their jobs and in need of financial assistance,” House explains, “and we were able to help quite a few single mothers through what I called “A (MOM)ent of Relief”, giving over $5,000 in that year alone.”
House is based out of Hampton, VA, but the foundation serves women across the United States. Though the work is currently done primarily online, the hope is to host two brick and mortar locations in Richmond, VA and Screven, GA. The facilities will offer direct services to include wardrobe assistance, food assistance, and small group mentoring. These “HUGS” are a practical way to demonstrate God’s love, reminding mothers that they are not alone, unseen, or forgotten – even in unfavorable circumstances.
